About installing screws and anchors
When hanging a heavy object, it is best to mount it to a wall stud or it may
put a hole in the wall if it falls. You can hang lighter objects between studs
on a hollow wall anchor.
If you are installing a weight bearing screw into sheetrock, you will want to
make sure that the threads are long enough to reach a joist or stud.
You will first want to locate the stud and mark it with a pencil.
Next, you will need to drill a pilot hole, which should be smaller than the
hardware to be installed. You can use a 1/8-inch bit when drilling pilot holes
in this situation.
You will then need to turn the screw into the pilot hole. Start by hand, and
switch to pliers of a cordless power screwdriver if installing by hand becomes
too difficult.
How to install hollow wall anchors
First choose the hollow wall anchor you wish to use. You could use a molly
bolt, toggle bolt or plastic hollow wall insert for a hollow wall or door.
You should then mark the position where you want the anchor or insert to be
placed. Next, drill a hole just large enough for the anchor or insert to fit.
You will then need to place the screw into the molly bolt or toggle bolt before
you push it through the wallboard and into the hollow space in the wall. You
will need to place the insert into the hole before driving the screw of
attaching the hook if you are using a plastic hollow wall insert. Be sure not to
over tighten the screw.
Another alternative to consider when looking for hollow wall mounts is an anchor
that looks like a large screw with big threads. Just thread these anchors
directly into the wallboard using either a power screwdriver or a hand held
screwdriver. These anchors bury themselves in the wall so that they align flush
with the wall. They have a threaded opening in which a screw can be placed.
