You must know your window measurements when considering purchasing shades,
whether you are ordering them custom made or buying them off the shelf.
You must first decide what type of shades you want, whether bamboo or vertical
Venetian.
You must then decide where the shades will be placed. They can be placed outside
of the window frame for a look that is similar to curtains or inside for a look
that is more modern and clean.
You must next determine how much coverage you want. When you hang the shades
inside the window frame, the coverage will be inside. You will have more leeway
if you choose an outside shade. Be sure you take into consideration how light
hits each window.
Next, use a tape measure to measure the window.
If you plan to set the shade inside of the frame, measure from top to bottom and
left to right. Be sure to note the depth of your window so that you are certain
that it will accommodate the shade you purchase.
If you plan to hang the shade outside of the window, you will need to measure
from the point where you will hang the shade to the point where you want the
shade to drop. Also measure from side to side taking into account how far beyond
the window frame you would like the shade to reach. Remember, you will need at
least two inches above the window for mounting brackets.
Basic shades come in a variety of standard window sizes. Some hardware stores
will also cut Venetian style shades to order for a small fee.
If you are ordering custom made shades, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s
instructions for measuring. Some different products have different
specifications for measurements.
To properly measure for inside mount blinds, be sure you measure the window in
three different places and use the most narrow measurement. Not all windows are
perfectly square.
